Henri Matisse #9

Henri Matisse in his studio, 1949.

"In the mornings he gets out of his bed and goes back to his studio in the apartment, where he is finishing the murals of the Chapelle des Dominicains at St Paul de Vence. This big hotel room is the exact size of the little chapel, he does most of his painting with a nine foot long stick, with which he can reach every corner of the room, and also it is easier for his rigid fingers to hold than the pencil. The walls are covered with paper and if he does not like a drawying, his secretary just covers it up with a fresh piece of paper. The floor is covered with pasted down newspapers to protect it from dropping paint."
